Red hot poker, or touch lily plants grow best in full sun to part shaded locations with fertile, well-drained soil. Common Name: Red Hot Poker, Torch Lily. Origin: Native to southern and eastern Africa. Culture: Plant in full sun with moist, humus-rich well-drained soil. In the summer, Kniphofia can handle moisture, but they need well-drained soil during the winter. Also, they need moisture when the blooms are forming and will fail to flower if conditions. Red Hot Poker produces striking bold colored flowers atop tall stems. Perennial gardeners often use them as big focal points in the garden. Easy to grow and a great choice for a beginner gardener. Spice up your hypercums, heleniums and gaillardias. The classic showpiece. GARDEN HINTS: Seeds may be started indoors about 6 weeks before outdoor planting time. In cold areas, protect over winter with a layer of straw mulch. Cultivate or mulch to control weeds.
